WEST BARNSTABLE — Cape Cod Community College officials say they have raised half of the $3.7 million needed to renovate and expand the nursing program’s teaching center by the fall. During a press conference Tuesday that included renderings of the planned state-of-the-art teaching center and laboratory, Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank President and CEO Dorothy A. Savarese announced that the bank was contributing a $250,0000 challenge grant of $50,000 over each of the next five years. The college also has received a $350,000 state grant for the project, Kathy McNamara, executive director of the Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation, said. Along with a donation of $1 million from Cape Cod Healthcare announced in October, in addition to donations from Maureen Wilkins and two anonymous givers, $1.9 million has been raised so far, McNamara said. The renovation and expansion of the Nursing and Allied Health Learning Resource Center and laboratory on the ground level of the North Building this summer will double the size of the teaching space and bring it up-to-date with two high-tech computer simulation rooms. “We’re nursing instructor online looking at having the laboratory facility expanded and renovated before the start of the fall semester,” Cape Cod Community College President John Cox said. College officials plan to gradually increase the number of students in the popular nursing program until it has up to 32 more students each year. Currently the program has 64 full-time day students and 32 part-time evening students, according to college officials.
